About Pair Drift

Pair Drift is a trading game played with play money. Gold, three currency pairs, four coins and two US stock indices, each with its own candle chart, an order book and a ticket where you pick a size, a leverage and a side. Think the price is going up, you buy; think it is going down, you sell; close the trade and the difference is your profit or loss. None of it is real money, nothing can be paid in or cashed out, and it is a game, not financial advice.

It plays two ways. The sandbox runs on live prices: while the public quote feed answers, the chart you are trading is the real market, minute by minute, and the calendar of real economic releases scrolls along the bottom. There is no clock. You pick a starting balance, and the account is kept between visits — close the tab with a stop-loss set and, when you come back, the minutes you missed are replayed and anything that would have triggered has triggered. The challenge is the other way: five minutes, $1,000, and a simulated market in a mood drawn for that run — trending up, trending down, choppy, a news day, a crash half way through, or a recovery.

Underneath both is the same account, and it behaves the way a broker's does. Sizes are in lots: one lot of a currency pair is 100,000 units, one lot of gold is 100 ounces, coins are sized in coins. Every trade pays a spread, bigger trades slip more against a thin market, and the margin is shared across everything you have open, so a loss on one market eats the room you have on another. Let the margin level fall to 60% and a challenge run is over; at 50% the worst position is closed for you. Orders go beyond buy and sell: limit, stop, stop-limit, a trailing stop that follows the price, and a pair of orders either side of the market where the first one to fill cancels the other.

The challenge has ranks to climb, six of them, and each one opens more markets, more order types and more leverage; the first gives you one currency pair, Bitcoin and no leverage at all, because that is where the lesson is. A score rewards a run that won more trades than it lost and never dug a deep hole, and a daily challenge gives everybody the same market on the same day. What it is not: a place to practise a strategy you mean to use with real money. The challenge market is invented and runs sixty times faster than a real one, and the sandbox is a good way to learn what a margin call feels like, which is the point.

Controls

Tap a market
Opens its chart. Keys 1 to 9 and 0 do the same
BUY / SELL (B / S)
Opens a trade at the market price with the size and leverage on the ticket
Size buttons, 25-75% and Max, + / −
Set the size. Tap the number to type one; a size your margin cannot carry turns red
Order type menu (L for limit)
Market, limit, stop, stop-limit, trailing stop or OCO. For a resting order, tap the chart to set its price
Close (Space)
Closes a position; Space closes your latest one
Drag, wheel, + and − on the chart
Scroll back through time and zoom
Sun or moon (T)
Switches between the dark and the light theme
Pause (P), or leaving the tab
A challenge pauses itself when it loses the screen and never resumes on its own. The sandbox does not pause: its market is the real one

Tips

  • Watch the margin level, not the balance. It is equity over the margin in use, and the run ends at 60% no matter how good the balance looked a minute ago.
  • Size is what kills an account, not direction. At 10x leverage a 1% move against you is 10% of what you put up; the ticket shows the margin and the notional of every trade before you press the button.
  • A trailing stop is the lazy way to keep a winner: it follows the price up and never comes back down, so a trade that ran leaves with most of what it made.
  • When the news countdown appears over the chart, prices are about to jump. An OCO — one order below the market and one above — catches the move whichever way it goes.
  • In a challenge, ending the run in profit with more than a fifth of the clock left adds 10% to the score. Winning more trades than you lose, and never falling far, is worth more than one big bet.

What changed

  • Released. Sandbox on live prices and five-minute challenges; ten markets, trading in lots, six order types, dark and light themes.
