About Oredrift

Oredrift is an idle miner about deciding when to throw away what you have built. You tap to break rock, the rock gets harder as you go down, and fairly quickly you hire a crew who keep digging whether the tab is open or not.

The loop that holds it together is the collapse. At some point the shaft you are in stops being worth deepening, and you bring it down deliberately: everything in it is gone, and you start again from the surface with a permanent advantage that lets you reach depths the first shaft could never have got to. Choosing that moment — a bit early and you gave up progress, a bit late and you spent an hour for nothing — is the whole game.

Being idle is meant literally. The crew works while the tab is closed, so a session can be two minutes of spending and then nothing until the evening, and the game is built to be played that way rather than to punish you for leaving. There is no energy bar and nothing expires.

It is portrait, one-handed and under 100 KB, which makes it the game on this site most suited to a phone in a queue.

Tips

  • Tapping is for the first minute of a shaft and almost never worth it after that. Everything past the opening is paid for by the crew.
  • Upgrade the cheapest crew member you have not upgraded yet rather than the strongest one. Breadth beats depth until the shaft stalls.
  • The signal to collapse is not a number, it is a feeling — when the next depth costs noticeably more than the one before did, you are already past it.
  • Close the tab on purpose. Coming back to a full haul is the best-paying move in the game and the only one that costs nothing.

What changed

  • Sound now stops properly when the game is paused by the page around it, instead of playing on underneath.
